Belgium Karate Organisation Shinkyokushin
Osu!
"Is karate a martial art or a fighting sport?" is something we sometimes ask at the beginning of an interesting discussion. In our opinion, this question is answered perfectly during karate practice. As the Belgium Karate Organisation Shinkyokushin, we try to elevate the karate sport that will offer our members a healthy, strong and trained body to a true art that can mean more to many participants than an activity or leisure activity.
Karate, and in particular (Shin-)Kyokushin karate, is offered by our organisation as a way of life. Thanks to their passion, our karatekas seek energy and balance in their relationships, activities and in themselves. Each of us has the freedom to determine where the sport ends and the art begins. And what's more, not only fighting or kumite is central, karate offers a number of fascinating facets including kata and kihon that everyone can discover and study at their own level.
Thanks to karate we can bring together people and clubs who want to train healthily on the one hand and expect a little more from their physical exercises on the other. Attention to spirit, inner energy as well as personality, perseverance and fun are also important. The Belgium Karate Organisation Shinkyokushin would like to invite you to come and train in one of our dojos.
The Belgian Karate Organisation Shin Kyokushin (B.K.O.S.) is a non-profit organisation and changed its name in 2003, at the same time as the worldwide introduction of Shinkyokushin Karate. The BKOS is an umbrella national association that Belgian dojos (sports schools) can join. In turn, the B.K.O.S. is a member of the World Karate Organization (W.K.O.) and the European Kyokushin Organization (E.K.O.)
The BKOS aims to organise karate events, stimulate and improve the level at the "top" and in the "breadth" and promote karate in general. In practice, this is achieved by organizing the following activities:
- Organizing the annual International camps, where the dan-grade (black belt) exams are also held
- Monitoring, stimulating and guiding karateka during the preparation of dan-grade exams
- Organizing the annual cadre days, intended for the teaching cadre members of the affiliated dojo
- Inviting Japanese and European shihans, instructors and top fighters to the camps, cadre weekends or seminars
- Organizing kata and kumite competitions for seniors and juniors
- Sending Belgian participants to foreign tournaments. (EC, WC and open national championships)
- Giving various courses and training to dojo cadre
- Organizing 4-yearly federation training for kata and kumite. (kata from 4th kyu, kumite from 12 years)
- Organizing the annual national youth day for karateka from 6 years
The BKOS tries to provide a structure for an Eastern-oriented fighting/defense sport but is based on a Western organizational structure. In practice this means that the board is there for its members and that the members (affiliated dojos/sports schools) themselves compose the board each year by means of democratic elections.

Martin Michel
Shihan - 7th dan
Shihan Martin Michel, Banch Chief, was named an honorary member due to his long-standing commitment to the Belgian Kyokushin Organization [BKKO] and his excellent promotion of Belgian karate at the national and international levels.
Shihan was born in Antwerp on April 5, 1954, and began Kyokushin karate in 1971 in Schoten. He earned a Shodan diploma in 1979 and a Rokudan diploma in 2012.
In 1979, he became the owner of the Halle Zoersel dojo club, but was selected as a lightweight by the Belgian team for the 2nd World Championship in Japan. He was unable to participate due to mandatory military service. Unfortunately, Kyokushin (Shin) karate is not an Olympic discipline, and therefore no exemption was granted. Shihan has been head of the Kyokushin branch since 1991, but was also the national representative of Belgium until 2026. For the European Organization, he was a technical member and member of the examination committee from 1981 to 2016, but also secretary of the European Karate Organization EKO from 1992 to 2016.
Shihan has been a member of the World Karate Organization's Board of Directors since 2016, and has also been the first honorary member of the EKO since 2021. The BKOS is very proud of Shihan's efforts, particularly his active contribution to co-organizing the "Heer Sur Meuse" spring camps from 1986 to 2002 and his contribution to organizing various national and international competitions since 1981.
Shihan was a lawyer at the Antwerp Bar from 1979 to 2021 and continues to practice part-time. Based on his profession, he drafted the statutes of the BKOS and the EKO.

- Owner of the Niji Yama Dojo non-profit club since 1993
Marc Goyvaerts
shihan - 5e dan
Shihan was born in 1963 and has been practicing karate since 1978.
His younger years [1978-1992] were focused on mastering karate, participating in competitions and getting to know other physical sports such as judo, kickboxing and pencak silat. In those years he became nidan. He became Belgian champion four times, but also achieved a third place at the European championships.
Because he exercised 24 hours a week, he wanted to make time for his partner and his work career and decided to stop karate. At that time he obtained a universal degree in health sciences and made a career in health care.
In 2000 he started karate again and in 2002, he re-examined for shodan for Shihan Midori.
During these years the Belgian Karate Organisation went through a very difficult time. He was asked to take over the chairmanship of the Belgian Karate Organisation. Shihan made a very important contribution to the Belgian organization:
• The Belgian organization has grown from 3 to 16 dojos;
• Co-organization: European Championship 2012
• 1st European Full Contact Camp Belgium 2017 [more than 500 participants]
• Organization of the Belgian Championship 2024 [more than 500 participants]
• Since 2007 organization of annual camps for adults [Mountain Camp] and children's camps [Easter Camp]
In karate, he has again participated in the European Championships [kumite 2008] [kata 2011] and his last kumite match took place during the Dreamcup in Japan in 2015. He has been an EKO referee since 2005.
Shihan has been the club owner of Asahi dojo since 2000 and fit2fight with more than 200 members. He was also the club owner of Kaido dojo from 2014 to 2022.
With great dedication, he embraces the position of Branch Chief and continues to dedicate his efforts to supporting Shinkyokushin karate in Belgium.
Dan members
This is a current list of BKOS dan diplomas. All dan diplomas have been examined according to the international EKO rules. Examinations are held once a year at the Mountain Camp in Namur for the examination committee.
Shihans
Shihans are the main instructors in our organization. With their years of experience and acquired knowledge, they add an extra dimension to Shinkyokushin, with a clear focus on the deeper foundations of Kyokushin and the cognitive aspects of learning. Shihans are, above all, the teachers of teachers.
